Anybody know how to get scratches out of a window?
I do stained glass by trade, and there is no way to get a scratch out of glass without “grinding” glass away (I use Lava on a fiber wheel and Cerium Oxide on a polishing wheel). Toothpaste will not work, or any other product for that matter. Most products “fill in” the scratch, but it is still visible and can still be seen. The only products that will get scratches out will leave indents in the glass. I know this because I have tried every product know to man to remove scratches without affecting the glass. When I have scratches on my stained glass, I have to recut the pieces because of the inability to remove scratches without it being noticable.
Cerium Oxide is NOT an abrasive that will scratch your glass (I use it as the final polishing step when beveling glass to make the bevel clear again, or to get minor imperfections out of glass that are NOT scratches), but it does eat at the glass and will leave an indent depending on how deep you have to go to get the scratch out. If the glass is tempered (your side glass in your doors), it is wise to leave the scratch or have the glass replaced as the glass is likely to shatter. If the glass is laminated (your windshield) the glass will not shatter but will leave a concave in your glass and will distort where you look out. Your windshield is a piece of plastic sandwiched between two pieces of annealed glass (not tempered). That is why you get cracks and runs in your windshield and it doesn't shatter.
If the scratch is deep, get the glass replaced. If the scratch is minor, leave it alone as it will repair itself (glass is a liquid). It will take time to repair itself, so if it is a bother to you, get it replaced.
